Recombinant viruses are commonly used for gene transfer. These are viruses with some or all of the viral genes replaced by the relevant therapeutic gene. To date the three most commonly used viruses for gene transfer are adenovirus, retrovirus and adeno-associated virus. More recently lentiviruses, a subgroup of the retroviruses, and sendai virus are being used.
